Update Your Mind
The purpose of Update Your Mind is to share with you tools to increase the power of your mind. Make no mistake about it, you have the power to update, change and improve your mind and your destiny if you choose to.
Neuroscience has given us a new tool, called neuroplasticity, also called brain plasticity. However, many brilliant researchers and authors knew about and wrote about many of these “new” ideas many years earlier.
Brain Research by Giants
Throughout history, giants in the field of brain research, scientists, and philosophers have studied and worked to explain the human brain and mind.
Psychiatric and neuroscience giants of the past 120 years have given us enlightenment and explanations for furthering human happiness and knowledge. For example:
-
Franz Alexander and Sigmund Freud led research into psychosomatic illness – illnesses like asthma and rheumatoid arthritis are linked to personality types.
-
Paul Bach-y-Rita and others pioneered serious advances in neuroplasticity – the ability of neural networks in the brain to change by growing and reorganizing themselves.
-
William James adopted the term “plasticity” to denote changes in nervous paths associated with the establishment of habits.
-
Today, neuroscience researchers and authors give us new ideas and methods to affect our emotions and our abilities in our everyday lives.
-
Earlier researchers and authors told us about many of these same principles, but “scientists” of their day never took them. Sometimes, “science” lags behind real knowledge.
Schools of Thought
Some schools of thought believed that the brain controlled all activities in the body and mind. But, others have believed that the mind controls the brain and thus has ultimate control over all human activities.
Libraries and the internet are full of books and research documents that enable us to take advantage of this knowledge to improve our lives. This site will help guide you through some of this literature and refer you to useful resources.
As part of our process, we will be using the words “brain” and “mind.” Here is a simple, but not perfect explanation of the terms. Briefly, the brain is the physical, “wet” organ in your head made up of nerve cells and blood vessels. It is the central organ of your nervous system.
The mind is your thoughts, memories, and other mental activities made up of vibrating energy. You could think of the mental (mind) activities like electricity, and the brain like an electric grid of wires, transformers, and substations. However, it’s all more complicated than that, but this should be enough for now.
Enjoy the journey.
Your Pilot
GrandPa Mel, (that’s me) will be your pilot on this journey of your mind. I am an old fart who has spent decades learning about and doing all kinds of things, from social work to information technology to the food industry and more. Now, it’s time to share information. Hopefully, you can find some of it useful in your life.
Be well,
GrandPa Mel
